WHAT IS CATHOLIC "THEOLOGY"?
Catholic theology is the understanding of Catholic doctrine or teachings, and results from the studies of theologians. It is based on canonical scripture, and sacred tradition, as interpreted authoritatively by the magisterium of the Catholic Church.
Catholic theology contains a highly developed set of doctrines that have matured over two millennia, from the foundational contributions of the Apostles to the Church Fathers to the Medieval Scholastics to the Modern era. Fundamental areas of Catholic theology include the nature of God, Jesus Christ, humanity, the saints, and the Virgin Mary; divine grace and its role in justification and salvation; and other topics such as Biblical theology, moral theology, spiritual theology, sacramental theology, ecclesiology, and eschatology.
Catholic theology is the systematic study of the beliefs, doctrines, and practices of the Catholic Church, rooted in divine revelation. It relies on a synthesis of sacred scripture, sacred tradition, and the teaching authority (Magisterium) of the Church, guided by the principle of faith seeking understanding.
Core Foundations:
- Scripture and Tradition: Belief that God's revelation is transmitted through both the written Word of God (the Bible) and the living Tradition of the Church.
- Faith and Reason: The conviction that faith and human reason do not contradict each other, but work together to help understand God.
- The Magisterium: The official teaching office of the Church—composed of the Pope and bishops—responsible for authentically interpreting Scripture and Tradition.
Major Branches:
- Dogmatic/Systematic Theology: Explores core doctrines like the Trinity, the divinity and humanity of Jesus (Christology), creation, and salvation.
- Moral Theology: Studies human behavior and decision-making in light of Christian values, the Ten Commandments, and the teachings of Jesus.
- Sacramental and Ecclesiological Theology: Focuses on the nature of the Church (Ecclesiology) and the seven sacraments as channels of God's grace.
- Eschatology: Examines the final events in history and the ultimate destiny of humanity, including death, judgment, heaven, and hell.
