Preparing for Mass

Preparing for Mass involves arranging your mind, body, and heart to participate in the Church's worship.

A simple prayer before Mass is: "Lord Jesus, help me to worship you with my whole mind and heart, hear your word, and offer myself more completely to you."

Before Mass:

• Read the Sunday readings beforehand and consider what God may be saying through them.
  
• Pray briefly, asking for humility, attention, repentance, and openness to grace.
  
• Examine your conscience. If you are conscious of mortal sin, receive sacramental Confession before receiving Holy Communion.
  
• Observe the Eucharistic fast: abstain from food and drink, except water and medicine, for at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion.
  
• Dress modestly and appropriately, remembering that Mass is the sacred liturgy and the Eucharist is truly Christ’s Body and Blood.
  
• Arrive early, preferably 10–15 minutes beforehand, to silence distractions and settle into prayer.
  
• Silence your phone and avoid unnecessary conversation in the church.
  

During Mass:

• Follow the readings and prayers, but do not treat the liturgy merely as something to watch.
  
• Participate actively through the responses, singing, gestures, attentive listening, and interior prayer.
  
• Offer God your joys, sufferings, work, relationships, and intentions in union with Christ's offering.
  
• At the consecration, adore Christ truly present under the appearances of bread and wine.
  
• Receive Holy Communion reverently only when properly disposed and according to Catholic discipline.
  

After Mass:

• Remain for a few minutes of thanksgiving, speaking with Christ whom you have received.
  
• Consider one concrete way to live the Gospel during the coming week.
  
• Remember that Sunday participation in Mass is a serious obligation for Catholics unless there is a justifying reason such as illness or unavoidable circumstances.
