The New Rosary Florilegium is a scriptural rosary gathered from the Liturgy of the Hours. As a rosary devotion to Mary's pondering heart, it is also called the Florilegium of the Heart: "Mary kept in mind all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). Like the Angelus, the Florilegium Rosary offers a verse of scripture for each Hail Mary. It also offers a weekly cycle of seven Mysteries of the Lord, one for each day of the week, as well as three florilegia of scriptures for different liturgical seasons: the Florilegium Joyful for Ordinary Time; the Florilegium Sorrowful for Lent and Advent; and the Florilegium Glorious for Easter and Christmas.

This Florilegium of the Heart answers the call of the Vatican Council to draw Catholic devotions closer to the Sacred Liturgy: Popular devotions of the Christian people are to be highly recommended ... but such devotions should be so drawn up that they harmonize with the liturgical seasons, accord with the Sacred Liturgy, are in some way derived from it and lead the people back to it, since in fact the Liturgy by its very nature is far superior (Sacrosanctum Concilium I.1,V).

The Rosary originated in the Middle Ages in just such a desire of the faithful to imitate the chanting in churches of the Hours. The faithful began to pray an Ave for each of the 150 Psalms of the Psalter, the heart of the Divine Office. They called it Mary's Psalter at first. The Hail Mary consisted at the time only of the verses from Luke. To these scriptural verses the devotion of the faithful added praises and petitions of Mary and Jesus, one for each of bead of the rosaries with which they kept count. In the early 1400's the Carthusian Dominic of Prussia assigned 50 scriptural clausulae to each Ave; then in the 15th century the Dominican Blessed Alan of Roche simplified it into 15 mysteries.

Inspired anew by the renewed Liturgy of the Hours, the New Rosary Florilegium aims to bring forth both new and old (Matthew 13:52) out of the treasure of Mary's pondering heart, as the primordial witness to the Mystery of Christ: His mother kept all these things in her heart (Luke 2:51). The three seasonal florilegia gather from the Liturgy of the Hours its most moving scriptural verses and arrange them for meditation on the beads of the rosary, integrating the Holy Rosary with the Divine Office in the ancient tradition of Lectio Divina--as a new lay breviary for the contemplative Catholic.

The free website at NewRosary offers a free download of the Florilegium as well as various other devotionals, such as meditations on the mysteries by saints from the Office of Readings and papal teachings on Mary. The Facebook page offers a decade a day, with a link to the webpage for the full rosary of the day.

Essential Forum Rules

Clear boundaries keep the community charitable and orthodox include:

1. The Law of Charity: No name-calling, personal attacks, insults, or uncharitable language. Attacks upon the Catholic laity, religious, or clergy is unacceptable.

2. Magisterial Fidelity: No promotion of heresy, schism, or explicitly condemned movements.  Catholics Forum adheres to the Magisterial teachings of the Church, which we do not waiver nor criticize.

3. Respectful Debate: Discuss theological differences politely without condemning others' faith.

4. No Spam or Self-Promotion: Restrict advertising to somewhere else.  This is not the Place to advertise or boast of yourself or business endeavor.


Post/Reply Guidelines

These Guideline are what we suggest to help form the content of your Posts and Replies. We suggest all Members follow them in keeping this Catholics Forum for a safe and respectable community.

These Guidelines are what govern our behavior here at Catholics Forum. By posting a message or reply, you agree to follow these Rules and Guidelines.

Before proceeding with posting a new New Topic, or Replying to an existing Topic, we ask that you first spend some time in prayer by carefully considering the content and tone of your post.

IMPORTANT:  When posting the name of a book of the Bible, do NOT abbreviate the name of the book.  For example,
  • John 1:1 is correct.
  • Jn. 1:1 is incorrect.

If you have any questions, concerns, or issues please feel free to reach out to one our volunteer Moderators, the Administrator, or other experienced Members for help. They will do their best to assist.


What NOT to include in your Posts/Replies:
  • Never post any personal identifiable information about yourself or others (such as your email address, residential address, phone number, etc. (This is a public forum and what you post is visible for the world to see, including Search Engines).
  • Hostility, disrespect, or discord, which create divisions. (For example... "I'm here because I hate abc and xyz because they're scumbags").
  • Lengthy or long-winded paragraphs. Keep it simple, tidy, brief, and to the point. Break up your lengthier paragraphs into smaller sentences.


Quality vs. Quantity of Posts:

The quality of your Posts contents are valued much greater than the quantity (in number) of your Posts.  We'd rather see the quality and relevance of your Posts/Replies.  A few GREAT posts will go much further in building the Body of Christ, rather than the quantity of posts/replies.  (For example, rather than Replying to a posts which says "I agree with your belief/position", respond with an affirmation and explanation that details WHY you agree or can emphasize with the Posters' belief or thoughts.)

Build upon the posts' topic with quality.


Use References or Resources:

Support your belief, or position, by including legitimate Catholic references or resources which support your belief.  Examples include:
  • Sacred Scripture.
  • the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC).
  • a Papal encyclical.
  • a Catholic doctrinal resource.
  • Quotation of a cononized Saint or Doctor of the Church.
  • etc.
